Ensure you ask how your car hire company deals with tolls when you pick up your vehicle. Toll roads are common throughout the country and are typically charged at either a flat rate or based on distance. An ETC tag is usually required for driving on expressways, and most car hire companies will provide one. They may charge the tolls to your card as you go or add it to the total cost of your booking.
There are a few important road rules to be aware of when driving in the Philippines. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05% throughout the country. If you're pulled over, be prepared to possibly take three sobriety tests and, if you don't pass these, a breathalyser test. If you're travelling with children, be aware that children under the age of six cannot sit in the front seat and children under the age of eight must use an appropriate child car seat or booster. Generally, these can be provided by your car hire company.
In the Philippines, you can expect to share the road with drivers operating a wide range of vehicles. These include other cars, motorcycles, bikes and public utility vehicles such as jeepneys and multicabs. Be prepared for smaller vehicles to weave in and out of traffic, especially in busy city areas. It's also important to keep an eye out for wildlife and farm animals in rural areas, as well as stray dogs on city roads and highways.

They have my reservation and they tell me at the counter that they ran out of car. I told them they have to honor my reservation. They then drove me to their other rental office from the airport. Spend at least 1-1/2 to 2 hours of unnecessary delay
The car was great, some of the staff were really helpful when the car broke down. The reason was that the gas gauge showed still three bars but we were out of gas in the middle of nowhere. When we finally found a way to contact Hertz it took a long time for help to come. They could not figure out the problem. We had to take a very stressful local bus for hours, and it took a day and a half before we had the car back. Which created a lot of problems for us at our destination. So far we were fine with the situation. Complications just happen and employees involved tried their best to help. However: in the end we were shocked and dismayed when we were told at the airport Hertz office upon returning the car, that we still had to pay for the whole time. No reimbursement for the days we could not use the car and it was not in our hands. It took half an hour and a lot of disturbing interactions before we received at least a token reduction. That is why we do not give top ratings.
Hard to know which Avis to book as google maps seems to show 2 not far apart ... but once booked, it was straight forward. My late booking meant the office hadn't yet received notification of the booking but Kim worked hard to resolve and I had a car fairly quickly which was excellent.

Should I hire a car in the Philippines?
The public transport network is limited outside of Manila and other major cities, so having your own vehicle is often an easier way to get around if you're hoping to visit more remote parts of the country. The main alternatives to hiring a car will be private drivers and taxis, meaning having your own vehicle can be a cheaper option. Many companies that offer private drivers also offer self-drive hire cars. Hotspots like the Seven Lakes of San Pablo and the Batangas beaches are much easier to reach by car, plus, with your own vehicle, you can travel on your own schedule in privacy.
What is driving like in the Philippines?
While driving is an excellent way to get between cities and towns in the Philippines, you may wish to avoid driving in major city centres, such as Manila, when possible. Manila traffic is known to be very busy (especially during rush hours, roughly from 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00), and travellers may find it overwhelming. If you do head into busy city centres, while you should always stick to the road signs and rules, don't expect other drivers to do the same. It's a good idea to familiarise yourself with road signs in the Philippines before you get on the road. They generally follow international conventions but they aren't always reflective, so they can be harder to spot if you're not keeping an eye out.
How old do I need to be to hire a car in the Philippines?
If you're planning on hiring a car in the Philippines, you'll usually need to be at least 21 years old. Some car hire companies won't hire vehicles to drivers under the age of 25, and most others will add a daily young driver's surcharge to anyone between the ages of 21 and 25. If your driving licence is in English, you generally won't need an International Driving Permit (IDP) if you're visiting for less than 90 days. If your licence is in another language, you may need an IDP. When you pick up your vehicle, you'll usually need to present your driving licence, your passport and a credit card in your name.
What is the most popular car hire provider in Philippines?

What side of the road do you drive on in Philippines?
